York Softball Wraps Its Season with a Big Win!

York Softball had an exciting end to its season yesterday, beating Anzar 19-9 through sheer force of will and batting determination. The girls hit really well and played a fantastic game overall. Tyler Zenda '12pitched with eight strikeouts and went 3 for 5 at the plate with a home run; Ellie Smith '12 led the team at shortstop and went 3 for 5 with a double; Drea Cruchett '12started at first base and hit an RBI before leaving the game with an injury; and Jesse Blalock '12 started her first game in right field and had one plate appearance. Cassie Minor '13 also had a double, Mayra Melendez '14 hit a triple, Izzie Leahy '14 had a double, and Megan Hand '14 threw someone out at second base while playing catcher. Awesome! Many thanks to the cheering line of lacrosse players!

Another win for York Lacrosse!!

With no rest after yesterday’s victory over PCS, the Falcons again hit the road to travel to Carmel Valley and face the #1 seeded team, who hadn’t played a game since last Friday night. With their lead scorer (Gordon Chesebro '13) from yesterday's game slowed due to a knee injury, the remaining bruised but proud Falcons knew they would have to step up their game to beat the 11-1 Padres. Michael Cho '12 scored the only goal of the first period off a great feed from Jack Yost '14 and then on almost instant reply, this same duo scored the second goal of the game midway through the second period. The stellar York defense, anchored by the trio of Ki Martella '13, Scott Pirkle '14, and Matthew Lindley '12, gave up only one goal in the first period and at halftime it was 2-1, York. The Carmel team was trying a different strategy and saving their ‘ace players’ in case they were needed, so after Chesebro scored midway through the 3rd period to put York up 3-1, the ‘fresh and rested aces’ came on the field. The York defense was going to have nothing to do with this ‘sneak attack.’  With their best performance of the year, the defense stripped and blocked and pushed the Carmel offense around the field, refusing to give them a clean shot at their goalie Collin McDonald '12 who had eight saves in the game. The Padres scored once in the third quarter to bring the game within reach at 3-2. York pulled away again in the fourth with a fantastic feed from Cedric Coly '14 to Ryan Galloway '14 whose lightning speed continued to pump up his teammates. Carmel thought they might get back in the game with their only fourth quarter goal but less than two minutes later, Galloway’s speed drew too many defenders which freed up Nick Newman '14 for a flip shot into the Carmel goal to put the game at 5-3 and out of reach for the Padres who scrambled around the last two minutes of the game but never got close enough to the goal to be a serious threat. In a physical game where the Falcons refused to be pushed around, tough performances were put in by Aidan Glina '15, Kevin Ng '15, and Sam Gumberg '14.

MTAL Victory for York Lacrosse!

The 5th seeded York Lacrosse team traveled to play #4 seed PCS in Santa Cruz yesterday and proudly walked away with their first ever victory in an MTAL Lacrosse Tournament. Down 2-0 in the first quarter, Nick Newman '14 put the Falcons on the board with a great feed from Gordon Chesebro '13and the first quarter ended 2-1, PCS. In the next quarter, York tied the game when Andrew Kihs '14 scored off an assist from Jack Yost '14. PCS answered with three straight goals and jumped ahead 5-2 with less than a minute to play in the half when Chesebro took matters in his own hand  and scored two unassisted goals within eight seconds of each other during the waning seconds of the half. The score stood at 5-4, PCS. In the 3rd quarter, PCS again stretched their lead to three goals when Yost scored off an assist from Ryan Galloway '14 and 30 seconds later, Chesebro scored his third goal of the game!  After three quarters, the score was 7-6, PCS. York owned the fourth quarter when the defensive trio of Mathew Lindley '12, Ki Martella '13, and Scott Pirkle '14 continued to deny any clean shots by the Cougars and stole the ball over eight times as PCS tried to clear the ball from their backfield. After unassisted goals by Chesebro (his fourth) and Michael Cho '12 the Falcons were ahead 8-7, PCS took advantage of a man up situation and slipped one last goal by Collin McDowell '12(six saves) to tie the game 8-8 with just over three minutes left in the game. York returned the man up goal a minute later as Chesebro scored his fifth goal of the game off a great assist from Kihs. The stellar York defense then held off the frantic PCS offense the last two minutes to secure the win and mobbed their goalie in celebration! Final score 9-8, York! Outstanding individual efforts were also contributed by Sam Gumberg '14, Cameron Johnson '14, Cedric Coly '14, and Aidan Glina '15 – a great looking future for York Lacrosse! The Falcons travel to Carmel tomorrow to face the #1 seed.

Great year for York Lacrosse!

The RLS Pirates came to York on Wednesday May second prepared to dominate the Falcons and were rudely surprised by a stellar defense that had no interest in being walked on. Playing a zone defense that baffled the Pirates, York only allowed two goals in the first half and thanks to a goal from Gordon Chesebro '13, the halftime score was 2-1. Embodying a warrior mentality, the Falcons fought a tough physical second half that will leave a few bruises to boast about in the weeks ahead. Kudo’s to senior defenseman Matthew Lindly who played probably the best game of his high school career. A fitting way to end his last regular game as a Falcon. Not to be outdone were fellow seniors Michael Cho, who scored the second goal for York as the game clock expired, and goalie Collin McDowell who had 10 saves and played his best game ever. All the Falcons, and especially these seniors, had every reason to hold their heads high when they walked off the field, some for their last time. While the 7-2 score does not show what really happened during the game, it did leave the Falcons with a 5-7 record for 2012. The team made HUGE progress this year as they improved on offense by raising their scoring average per game from 3.5 goals to 7 and on defense made AMAZING progress by holding their opponents to an average of 7.16 goals per game versus 12 per game in 2011. The future looks very good for the Falcons. Next up is the MTAL tournament which will start next Tuesday with a trip to PCS.

York Lacrosse vs PCS

On Monday at PCS, the Falcons opponents scored five times in the first seven minutes before the defense switched to a zone defense and PCS was baffled for the last three quarters of the game as York out scored them 8-5. In a very exciting game, the Falcons clawed their way to an 8-8 tie with three seconds left in the 3rd quarter. In what is normally the Falcons favorite quarter, the fourth, PCS was able to wrestle the ball into the net two more times as York tried to hang on and complete their comeback. On paper, the Falcons looked great, out shooting PCS 30 to 16, dominating the ball control, and winning 16 of the 21 face-offs thanks to an outstanding effort by junior Gordon Cheesebro, who also had three goals.  Michael Cho '12 had three goals and two assists while Andrew Kihs '14 had the remaining two goals andone assist leaving us with a final score of 10-8 PCS. The Falcons have one last game this season on Wednesday, May 2nd. This is a critical home game for the Falcons as they face Stevenson where a win will give York a .500 season record and will lock in 4th place for the Falcons AND secure home field for their first MTAL tournament game next Tuesday, May 8th, most likely against PCS.

Lacrosse results - York Falcons vs Carmel Padres

Friday, the York Falcons faced the Carmel Padres starting with a zone defense the Padres quickly picked apart, jumping out to a 5-0 lead midway through the 2nd period. A shift to man-on-man coverage shut down the Padres with Ryan Galloway '14 scoring York’s first goal before the half. Gordon Cheesebro '13 scored York’s second goal in a fourth quarter which was tied with one goal for each team. Though the final score was 7-2, the Padres were visibly frustrated during the second half. After scoring three goals against our zone defense, Carmel's season leading scorer was held to only one goal for the remainder of the game by sophomore Scott Pirkle's relentless coverage and senior Collin McDowell’s 13 saves. The Falcons travel to PCS on Monday in an attempt to sweep another MTAL team.

The Falcons had a solid win at Watsonville in a wet game with a final score of 11-0. Collin McDowell '12 had his first shutout with 13 saves. With a number of starters returning to the lineup, the Falcons dominated in all areas of the game. York scoring came compliments of Michael Cho '12 (5 goals), Gordon Cheesebro '13 (3 goals and 1 assist), Andrew Kihs '14 (1 goal and 3 assists), Ryan Galloway '14 (2 goals and 1 assist), Aaron Ray '15 (1 assist). The Falcons are ramping their game back up for a Friday showdown at York against the #1 team in the MTAL right now, Carmel.

York Lacrosse, 4 more games in 9 days...

After defeating PG 12-10 in the season opener at PG, the York Falcons knew the Breakers would be seeking revenge at Mondays game at York.  It took only 10 seconds for PG to score their first goal as they ran up a 9-3 first half score, catching the battered Falcons off balance (missing roughly 9 players -5 starters- due to illness or injury). The York lacrosse players are smart, proud and adapt quickly. They knew it was time to take charge and own the second half. In the next 24 minutes, the Falcons won more face offs, won more ground balls, and out shot the Breakers. PG scored 2 in the 3rd and were held scoreless in the final quarter. The outstanding play by the Breakers goalie kept the York score at 4 for the game, but the Falcons were able to leave the field with their heads high and feeling much more confident going into their next game on Wednesday at Watsonville.

Boys Tennis wins 2 of 3 in Final Week; Finishing 10-5 Overall!

On Monday, the Falcons played perennial TCAL Champion Salinas High.  Super sophomores Josh Pompan and Ben Scott came out of the gates fast at #1 and #2 singles winning 6-0, 6-3 and 6-2, 6-3. The Cowboys played tough gaining the #3 and #4 singles spots over Michael Woo '13 and Alex Iatrou '14. Although seniors Aaron Shi and Alex Oh played an excellent second set, Salinas was too tough at #1 Doubles and they won a 3-6, 4-6, 9-11 thriller. Fortunately, Roth Ehnisz '12 and Sam Warner '13 were spot on at #2 doubles winning 6-3, 6-0. Freshmen Noah James and Matt Hein played an unbelievable first set, fighting off five set points and winning 13-11 in the first set tie-breaker. It would appear that set took its toll on the Cowboys and James and Hein won the second set 6-0 to propel the Falcons to a 4-3 victory!

On Tuesday, the Falcons put in another stellar effort, but the Torreadores of Monterey were just too much. The match of the day was at #2 Singles where Ben Scott '14 went against Joseph Quario. After splitting the first two sets 7-5 and 5-7 Quario went up 4-1 in the third set. Scott stormed back to get the match to 5 all before falling 7-5 in third set finale. The Falcons got victories from Josh Pompan '14 at #1 singles and Roth Ehnisz '12 and Sam Warner '13 at #2 Doubles but lost the match 5-2 overall. Monterey (16-2) will play San Benito on Tuesday for a berth in the play-offs.

In the final match of the season, York took on Pacific Grove at the beautiful Tennis Garden at the Inn at Spanish Bay. The doubles tandems of Johnny Lim '14/Alex Iatrou '14 and Sam Warner '13/Alex Oh '12 gave their all at #3 and #1 doubles but the Breakers were too tough. At #2 doubles, the Fantastic freshmen duo of Noah James/Matt Hein pulled out a 6-4, 7-5 victory. At a critical point in the second set, 5 games all and 3 points all, freshmen Matt Heinwas called for a double hit and appeared to lose the point.  However, since Hein's stroke was one continuous motion, the point was replayed. The Falcons won the point and the following game to close out the match 7-5. No. 1 singles player Josh Pompan '14 served and volleyed his way to a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Ben Scott '14 attacked his way to a 6-1 6-2 victory at #2 and Michael Woo '13 mixed up his spins well enough to win 6-0, 6-1 at #4 singles. At #3 singles, senior Ryan Katz went down 1-4 in the first set.  As he has done so many times this season, Captain Katz rethought his strategy and reeled off 11 of the next 12 games to win 6-4, 6-1. Final Score: York 5, Pacific Grove 2.

The league individual championships start Wednesday 12:00 at Salinas High. Semi-finals start Thursday 12:30 at Salinas High.

York Tennis updates

Last week, we lost on Tuesday 0-7 to Stevenson with our closest match being Josh Pompan taking his first loss of the season in a two and a half hour marathon 6-4, 2-6, 3-6 to Mason Vierra.  On Thursday, we dropped a 4-3 heartbreak to Carmel.  In that match we spilt the singles flights 2-2 (Josh Pompan '14 and Michael Woo '13 won at #1, #4) so it all came down to doubles.  After losing the first set, we charged back to win the second set but were only able to pull out one tiebreaker (at #3 doubles, Noah James '15 and Matt Hein '15).  A heroic effort in defeat in cold, windy, loud Carmel conditions.

This week, the Falcons returned to their winning ways.  With #1 Singles Player, sophomore Josh Pompan down playing the prestigous Easter Bowl in Palm Desert, the rest of the Falcons needed to step up their play in a big way - and they did!  Wednesday against athletic powerhouse Palma, the Falcons edged out a 5-2 victory.  Michael Woo '13 and Ryan Katz '12 led the way in singles while the doubles teams of Aaron Shi '12 and Alex Oh '12, Sam Warner '13 and Roth Ehnisz '12, and Noah James '15 and Matt Hein '15 sealed the victory in doubles.

On Friday, against a gritty Everett Alvarez group, the York squad had to dig deep again. The  Eagles took the #3 and #2 doubles spots.  At #4 singles, senior Roth Ehnisz played his first singles match.  Roth dropped the first set and mid-way through the second set suffered a bloody nose after a thirty ball rally ended in a minor collision.  Bloodied, but undeterred, Ehnisz charged back to take the second set but dropped the third set breaker 10-7.  Fortunately, seniors Alex Oh and Aaron Shi pulled out a 6-4, 6-3 victory at #1 doubles.  In singles,  Michael Woo '13 won 6-1, 6-1 while Ben Scott '14, who has been solid all season at #2, got his first victory at the #1 position, 6-2, 6-1.  Tied up at three matches apiece the final match came down to senior Ryan Katz at #2 singles.  Captain Katz was up to the challenge and pulled out a gritty 7-6, 6-4 match to clench the victory for the Falcons!

Next week is the last week of team play.  A rained out match against Salinas was rescheduled for this Monday at Chamisal.  Tuesday we travel to Monterey and we close out the season on Thursday against Pacific Grove at Spanish Bay.
