An essential part of York's mission is to prepare students for the world they will inherit, and that world needs to be a healthy one.

Quick Facts about York's commitment to the planet:

• Almost half of York's energy needs are produced by renewable solar energy on campus.
• The Science Building is the first building designed to be certified green.
• York is the first school to be recognized by the Monterey Bay Area Green Business Program.
• Recently York has added a new student body officer position: Environmental Sustainability Officer (or as she likes to be called, The Queen of Green).
• Environmental Science has been taught at York since the early 1990's.
• All students participate in a campus-wide recycling program.
• Disposable containers are made from compostable material.
