Michael Borrowman, History
B.A., Sheffield University, P.G.C.E., Sussex University, C.A.E.S., Southampton University
Michael Borrowman, or Mr. B as he is affectionately known to his students, has been at York for 22 years teaching 8th, 9th, and 12th grade history and 9th grade geography. Born in Bolton, England, he went to teaching to make a better world and taught high school and middle school history and special education during the ten year period before emigrating to the states.
He believes history should be alive and students often appear in his stories and anecdotes. He sees history as a science and a means to use detective work to get the truth. He likes to draw comparisons between the world today and the past and believes if it is not relevant to today then it should not be taught.
In his time at York, Michael has been to China as a Fulbright scholar and studied at the University of Washington with a National Endowment for the Humanities award.
He loves teaching at York since teachers are given the freedom to pursue their interests with students who are motivated and have a love of learning.
