Nicholas Sturch, art history, Ancient Greek
M.A. Oxford University
Nicholas was born in London, and grew up in London, San Francisco and southern England before going to Oxford University in England, where he studied Greek and Latin language and literature, and ancient and modern philosophy. After graduating from Oxford and studying for a year in the department of education, he spent three years teaching English (in French) in a huge state school in Tunisia, where he studied Arabic for a while, and enjoyed the wonderful hospitality and the plentiful Roman remains, before coming to York in 1965. He has taught English, French, ancient history, geography, Latin, Greek and art history – now concentrating on the last three. He coached soccer for thirty years (not without a league title). He has at different times been Assistant to the Headmaster and Academic Dean. He has been President of the Northern California Classical Association, and recently spent a week at a summer seminar speaking nothing but Latin. Outside his field of study, his chief interests are shipping (he is a contributor to “Marine News”, the journal of the World Ship Society), architecture, classical music and writing light verse.
