Welcome to York Music 2017-18

Dear New and Returning York Music Students:

York Music gets underway on Monday, August 14. Below is a review of our ensembles, the participation requirements, and the schedule. There are many opportunities for everyone. To join, check the rehearsal schedule below and then just show up. I hope many of you will join us.

Choir: Meets A, D, and G days at 7:40 a.m. in the Chapel
Directed by Mr. Murray Walker, open to all students in any grade, no experience necessary

Concert Band: Meets A, D, and E days at 7:40 a.m. in the Music Room
Directed by Ms. Amalia Diaz, open to all students in any grade with basic knowledge of a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument

Orchestra: Meets B, C, and F days at 7:40 a.m. in the Chapel
Directed by Ms. Amalia Diaz, open to all students in any grade with basic knowledge of a stringed instrument. This year the program will address the specific needs of both beginning and advanced players; not all students will be required at every rehearsal.

Jazz Big Band: Meets C and G days at 7:40 a.m. in the Music Room.
Directed by Dr. Rob Klevan, open to all students in any grade with basic knowledge of a woodwind, brass or rhythm section instrument (guitar, piano, bass, drum set). Students in 8th and 9th grade who play in the Jazz Band are also expected to play in the Concert Band.

Jazz Combo: Meets B days at 7:40 am in the Music Room.
Directed by Dr. Rob Klevan, open to all students in any grade with basic knowledge of a woodwind, brass or rhythm section instrument. Students in 8th and 9th grade who play in the Jazz Combo are also expected to play in the Concert Band.

Vocal Jazz Ensemble: Meets Tuesday afternoons at 2:50 p.m. in the Music Room
Directed by Dr. Rob Klevan, open to all students in any grade, no experience necessary

Chamber Choir: Meets as scheduled
Directed by Mr. Murray Walker, available to students in Grades 10, 11 and 12 with choral experience. Membership is by audition at the end of last school year.

Pianists: The piano is not a traditional ensemble instrument though it is occasionally used in the concert band. However, pianists usually make excellent percussionists. Interested students should see Ms Diaz. The piano is also an important instrument in jazz ensembles. Interested students should see Dr. Klevan.

  • Vocal Jazz meets during H&F on Tuesdays
  • Chamber Choir sectionals will be scheduled after the school year gets underway

All music ensembles will begin rehearsals during the week of August 14.

Monday, August 14, C day: Strings in the Chapel; Jazz in the Music Room

Tuesday, August 15, D day: Choir in the Chapel; Concert Band in the Music Room
