Board of Trustees
York’s Board of Trustees includes alumni, parents of alumni, current parents, and members of the local community who had no previous connection to York but who were attracted to the School by its record of achievement, its welcoming culture, and its commitment to serve students from a range of backgrounds.
Our trustees believe in the value of a York education for individual students, their families, and our communities.
Gary Ray, Chair of the Board Gary, parent of a current York student and a 2015 York graduate, is a lawyer and partner with Ottone Leach & Ray LLP in Salinas. Gary has served as Secretary of the Board, and was Chair of the Committee on Trustees and the Audit Committee. He joined the board in 2011.
Mary Adams, Vice Chair of the Board Mary is former president and CEO of United Way Monterey County and is a long-time leader in local nonprofit and civic organizations. She has also served in leadership positions for national, state, and regional organizations. Mary joined the board in 2010 as Chair of the Finance Committee.
Marilyn Calciano, Treasurer Marilyn, parent of a current York student and two York alumni, is a community volunteer who is active on several nonprofit boards. She is retired from a career in finance. Marilyn joined the board in 2012 as a member of the Advancement Committee and now chairs the Finance Committee.
Marianne Gawain ’76, Secretary Marianne is a former public utilities regulator, is an active school and community volunteer. She joined the board in 2011 as a member of the Advancement Committee.
Chuck Harmon, Head of School Chuck has worked in independent schools for more than 30 years in a variety of faculty and administrative positions. He became Head of School at York in 2002. Chuck is a member and participant in the work of all committees of the Board.
Michael Anderson '03 is vice president of Sales at Anderson Homes and vice president of Planning at Stonecreek Properties. He chairs the Audit Committee and is a member of the Executive Committee. Michael also serves on the Board of Directors for Monterey County Bank.
Alfred Diaz-Infante, parent of a 2016 York graduate, is the president & CEO of Community Housing Improvement Systems and Planning Association, Inc., (CHISPA) and CHISPA Housing Management, Inc. (CHMI). He serves as a trustee on several nonprofit and educational institution boards, and was a member of the Monterey County Planning Commission from 1993-1998. Alfred is Chair of the Committee on Trustees and is a member of the Executive Committee.
Dan Fenton ‘76 is a partner with Strategic AdvisoryGroup LLC, a national consulting firm. Dan and his family have been long-time supporters of York. Dan’s father, the late Lewis Fenton, was a founding board member and Dan joined the Board in 2002. Dan is Chair of the Diversity Advisory Committee.
David Foster-Bates worked in finance and investment banking on both U.S. coasts and was the President of Robert Talbott, Inc. In 2004, David and his wife Julia founded Equine Assisted Therapy at Mountain Valley, a pediatric therapy clinic using horses in treatments, and today he serves on many local Boards including the Cypress Fire Protection District. David joined the Board in 2016.
Mary Gray-Reeves, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of El Camino Real, is the parent of a 2011 York graduate. Bishop Mary is an ex-officio trustee serving on the Diversity Advisory Committee.
Sherri Helvie is the Assistant Head of School at Gateway School in Santa Cruz. She brings nearly 20 years of experience in education, serving in both teaching and administrative roles in K-12 and post secondary institutions. Sherri joined the Board in 2016.
Gordon Howie was an investment banker who worked with healthcare provider organizations for more than 30 years. He now consults part-time and serves on several nonprofit boards. Gordon joined the board in 2013 as member of the Finance Committee and Investment Subcommittee.
Greg Jamison is a veteran sports executive and the founder and president of Jamison Entertainment. He is the former president and CEO of the San Jose Sharks and serves on numerous corporate and nonprofit boards. Greg is a member of the Advancement Committee.
Hugh Jebson is the parent of a York student and the Head of School at All Saints' Day School in Carmel Valley. As a first generation immigrant to the United States, he began his teaching career in England and has served a number of elite day and boarding schools there and in the United States. With over two decades of experience, Hugh's dedication has taken him from teacher, coach, and advisor to school leader. Hugh joined the Board in 2016.
Patricia Kelly, parent of a current student, has spent much of her career in the financial industry and is currently a private investment manager. In the spring of 2014, she began teaching a course in Personal Financing and Investing at U.C. Santa Cruz. Patricia joined the Board in 2015 and is a member of the Advancement Committee.
Ben Nurse is a resourceful and innovative commercial and residential broker. With more than 24 years in real estate, he has experience analyzing market research, developing and implementing capital budgets, and managing commercial, retail, and residential property portfolios. Ben joined the Board in 2016.
Victor Ochoa '93 is an Interventional Cardiologist in Santa Cruz. Along with two established cardiologists in the community, he founded Cardiovascular Associates of Santa Cruz. Prior to this, he worked at Sacramento Heart and Vascular.
Kathleen Scarr, parent of two York alumni, is the former CFO for Growers Express and related entities. She spent many years in public accounting, and joined the Board in 2015 where she serves on the Committee for Trustees.
Kirsti Scott is Creative Director at Scott Design Inc and is active on several nonprofit boards. The parent of three York graduates, Kirsti chairs the Advancement Committee, and is a member of the Executive Committee. Kirsti joined the board in 2013.
Matt Simis '88 is the Director of Strategy for Tanimura & Antle, a fresh-vegetable grower-shipper headquartered in Spreckels. He joined the board in 2013 as a member of the Strategic Planning Committee and is currently the Co-Chair.
Jerry Traynor has led independent, international, and public schools for more than 35 years in a variety of administrative positions. He has served on nonprofit boards and is currently an active board member for the Carmel Rotary Club. Jerry joined the Board in 2015 and is a member of the Finance Committee.
Brenda Aronowitz is a lifelong educator and author who has taught at the secondary and university levels. Brenda retired in 2007 after serving York nearly 30 years as a humanities teacher and Assistant Head of School. Brenda’s two daughters and two stepsons attended York. She joined the board in 2011.
Peggy Downes Baskin is an author, lecturer, and retired professor of political science. Her former husband, the late Chuck Downes, was Head of School from 1966 to 1974, and her daughter, Cammy Torgenrud, is a member of the York faculty. Peggy and her husband, Jack Baskin, are long-time supporters of York and a number of college-level programs. Peggy joined the board in 2006.
Jim Tunney, is an author, motivational speaker, former teacher and school principal. He was interim Head of York in 1993-94.
Steven Webster is a marine biologist and a founder of the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Steven joined the Board in 1979 and has served in his emeritus advisory role since 2005.
Kim Kiest is the faculty representative to the board. Kim joined the York faculty in 1995, and teaches anatomy/physiology, biology, environmental science, math, and marine biology. She began her second, three-year term in May 2016.
Emily Mustoe ’17 is the student representative to the Board and her vast interests make her an ideal delegate for her peers. In the classroom, Emily enjoys Latin, Greek, history, and French. Outside the classroom, she is a competitive athlete (York Field Hockey, York Swimming, and Club Synchronized Swimming) and has a passion for fashion (Trashion Club President and costume designer for York's school plays).
