Sports: You can do this

There’s a lot to learn from being part of a team. York’s sports teams are competitive, and we like to win. But competition doesn’t have to be cut-throat. In fact, we don’t have cuts at all. If you want to try a new sport like lacrosse or field hockey or learn to throw a discus or a Frisbee, you’re on the team. Our open participation athletics policy makes it easy to take up a new sport or get even better at one in which you excel. At York, everyone plays.

Playing sports helps build skills that last long after the final whistle. Learning how to function as a team, to be a good sport, and to play with passion are all lessons that you can walk away with and you’ll make new friends in the process.

We value the body as well as the brain, so if team sports aren’t your thing, there are still plenty of options. Our Health and Fitness program offers a variety of recreational activities—ultimate Frisbee, weight training, fencing, soccer, jogging, volleyball, yoga, cross-country walking, martial arts, flag football, basketball, and badminton, to name a few. There is also an independent activity program for students who are committed to achieving high individual goals in special areas, such as equestrian events, dance, and club teams.

It’s all about finding a balance in your life and stretching yourself—physically, mentally, and emotionally. You won’t be going it alone, and that’s half the fun.
