Tom Murray, English, philosophy

B.A., Georgetown University, M.A.T., U.C. Berkeley

Tom Murray, a New Yorker by birth and disposition, began teaching at York in the fall of 1983. Tom came to York because, “the small size helped create a community more conducive to learning than did the larger, more impersonal schools in which I’d worked.” Shortly after receiving his bachelor’s from Georgetown University, Tom began his career in Puerto Rico, later moving to California to attend U.C. Berkeley to pursue his master’s degree. Since coming to York, Tom has taught a variety of courses, including eighth grade science, at almost every grade level. While his usual assignment is junior English, this year finds Tom also teaching senior Advanced Placement Literature and a one-semester elective in Philosophy.

In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Tom has worn a series of administrative hats, serving as Academic Dean and, more recently, Humanities Division Head. Several years ago, he returned to coaching as the varsity softball coach.

Tom lives in Pacific Grove with his wife Karen, daughter Brianna, and toddler son, Andrew.
