While participating in the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Teen Summit last year, Annabelle Norman '20 and Alexa Ortiz '20 connected with five local teens to raise awareness of ocean conservation through an additional passion of theirs—art. After getting approval from the city, the team set out to paint new utility boxes being installed around Monterey with different ocean scenes. In addition to inspiring others to care about ocean conservation, the paintings also help beautify the popular tourist areas by preventing graffiti.
To get started, the team sketched various design mock-ups, then determined what materials were needed. To raise funds for the paint and other supplies, they coordinated a booth at York's annual Fall Fair. Next they set out to bring their ideas to life. First they painted an ocean scene around the entire box, then each student went back in to add specific ocean life.
After the success of the initial utility boxes, Annabelle and Alexa presented to the Monterey City Council Meeting this month to get permission to paint additional boxes.
What a creative contribution to the community—great work Annabelle, Alexa, and team!
