Congratulations to Sophie Rasmussen '19, on winning a National Spanish Examinations Junior Study Abroad Scholarship! She will have the opportunity to spend ten days in July studying and exploring Madrid, Spain and its surroundings.
Applicants for this scholarship must place in the top 25% of scores on the exam; during her time at York, Sophie has consistently placed in the top 10%. As part of the application, she wrote an essay in Spanish about a political or cultural figure she'd like to meet, and what she would discuss with that person. Additionally, she filmed a conversation with Dr. Johnson about how she would benefit from the experience.
Pursuant to its mission, the National Spanish Examination (NSE), a program of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP), is committed to recognizing student achievement and promoting language proficiency in the study of Spanish. To this end, NSE selected twenty-four students from a large number of applicants across the country to travel to and study the language and the culture of Spain this summer. Students will take classes in the morning followed by cultural excursions in the afternoon to reinforce the lesson.
