Posted 11/14/2018 12:30PM
You are invited to a unique, special live performance at York School of a reading of
The Voice of the Prairie
A Play by John Olive
Directed by Robin McKee
Produced by The Listening Place (thelisteningplace.org) in cooperation with York School

This live performance, presented as a play reading much like a radio drama, will take place at York School on Saturday, Dec. 8th at 2:00 PM in the Gatanaga TheatreAdmission is free for Students & $5.00 for General Admission
Set in the mid-western prairie expanse during the "wild-west" birth of radio, The Voice of the Prairie takes us on a ride of romantic dreams and magical journeys and disturbing boogie men.  Leon Schwab (Richard Boynton), a New Yorker always looking for the big money, lights on a stupendous idea.  He moves from “hick” town to town, broadcasting a simple radio show from the roof of the general store, all the while selling his own radios from the store below at inflated prices.  The hardworking prairie farmers, hungering for communication from the outside world, buy into Leon’s plan. Little does Leon realize that he will be changed by his encounter with two human beings destined to learn about themselves through their meeting with him:
Frankie, the Blind Girl (Cambell Walker '19) and young Davey Quinn (Tobey Malone '20) meet as teenagers, both running from intolerable experiences and rushing headlong into the future.  Thirty years later Davey (Carl Twisselman) becomes Leon’s radio storyteller.  Frankie, now Frances (Pat Horsley) and David meet again years later as their tender adventures sweep through the heart of the American public – proving that all things are possible through the "viral" magic of radio!
P.S.  …and the FCC is threatening them all for broadcasting without a license!

This reading will be presented with the same cast 3 more times as well:
Saturday, Dec. 1 at 2:00 PM at the National Steinbeck Museum
Sunday, Dec. 2 at 1:30 PM at the Monterey Museum of Art
Sunday, Dec. 9 at 1:30 PM at the Monterey Museum of Art
