York School will administer the PSAT on October 30th. Each year Sophomores and Juniors participate in this exam, as it prepares students for future standardized tests used by many colleges for admission. Sophomores and Juniors should take this practice SAT this semester. York School will also offer a practice ACT later this semester (date to be announced later).
During a student’s Junior year, they should plan to take the PSAT in October and the real SAT and/or ACT for the first time during the second semester Junior year. It is not necessary (nor entirely beneficial) for students to take the real SAT or ACT early in their Junior year.
Fee: The College Board’s test fee is $17 (fee will appear on your statement from the York Business Office); some fee waivers are available for juniors (only) from low-income families, eligibility parameters can be found here.
Colleges do not see the scores from the PSAT, however, doing well may provide students with scholarship opportunities or national recognition. Learn more about the test here: https://parents.collegeboard.
There are many ways to prepare for the PSAT:
- One easy way is to focus on your math and English courses at York School this semester.
- Or you may find free support online at Kahn Academy: https://www.khanacademy.org/.
- You may also find prep books available at online book retailers.
- Another option to consider is taking a prep course. York School has coordinated with Crosswalk Prep again this year to offer a PSAT Prep class on Sunday, October 6th from 9am to 1pm. The cost is $125.00. To register see the flyer here.
