My first week in the Dominican Republic has been great! We have spent the past week volunteering at Conani, an orphanage for children with severe disabilities, and Niños Con Una Esperanza, an organization for children in a resource poor neighborhood. We also visited a Batey, which is a housing area for Haitian immigrants. There, a doctor talked to us about his work in the Bateys and about ways we could help with the way of life in places like those. It was very educational, and it helped me to get a better idea of what it would be like to be a doctor in a developing country.
This past Saturday, our group went to the 27 Waterfalls, where we got to jump and slide down waterfalls that were up to 25 feet high. Then, on Sunday, my friends and I went to the beach in Sosua, which is about two hours from Santiago. The water was warm and the beach was super pretty. We even saw some fish swimming around us, which was super cool. We will be volunteering and exploring the city for the rest of this week and next, and I'm excited for the rest of the trip!
