I’d like to use this opportunity to highlight one my favorite aspects of the York community—our swingin’ jazz program. Under the leadership of local legend Dr. Rob Klevan, York’s jazz program has expanded greatly in the past few years and now boasts a 20+ piece “big band” ensemble, a smaller jazz combo, and a vocal jazz ensemble. Over the past four years, I have learned to appreciate jazz not only as a complex and beautiful form of art, but also as a language of its own. Sharing this common language, I’ve been able to tap into in the vibrant jazz scene in the Monterey Bay Area, interacting with other high school musicians and professionals, especially through the programs offered by the Monterey Jazz Festival. For me, the best part about Jazz at York is the fact that it’s an inclusive and low-stress learning environment. We welcome all musicians, whether they have any experience with jazz or not and our ultimate goal is to have a good time just playing the music we love.
