We’ve all seen them. Each morning they sit lined up, ready and waiting - the York vans. Each time I see a York van, it brings a smile to my face. They bring together students from all grades, whether for a short commute to the Authors and Ideas Festival or a longer ride to a competition or community service opportunity.
York vans are a haven for:
- Math whizzes with their T-89 calculators and graph paper,  collaborating on a homework assignment
- Avid readers intent on finishing up the latest novel for English.
- Students discussing economics, world affairs, and weekend plans.
- Athletes getting “in the zone” by taking comfort in the beat from their headphones or resorting to comical efforts to fend off nervousness.
Meanwhile, coaches methodically map out last minute strategies to whoever is listening.
How is this scene made possible? Through the willingness of York teachers, fresh from a full day of enriching and inspiring students in the classroom, who give of their time to drive the vans wherever we need to go, and to stay to cheer us on.

At some point during your time at York, a van will no doubt be waiting for you. The ride that awaits will not only be a haven but a vehicle to victory.
