The New Year signifies a time both fickle and bold. New Year's resolutions will not last long for most, while real changes of habit are forced, evidenced at the top of every homework assignment, where 6's are firmly etched over the habitually scrawled 5's of 2015. More importantly for some of us, the beginning of January will mark the annual reemergence of York's spectacular robotics team (unknown to most, respected by some).
After a semester of preparation, through fundraising and team training sessions in the Design Shop, we will journey up Highway 101 to attend the annual FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition (FRC) Kickoff at San Jose State University. This day, January 9th, will mark the commencement of a six-week-long building season. During this high-paced, cooperative and competitive period, members of the York robotics team, Deus Ex Machina, will collaborate to construct a fully functioning robot. In the spring we will return to San Jose State University, where we will compete with both local and international teams in the Silicon Valley FRC regional competition.
Last year was my first year participating in robotics and I thoroughly enjoyed the collaboration--both with teammates and members of other local teams--that the competition demands. I am genuinely looking forward to returning to York's Design Shop, which will once again foster our creativity, commitment, cooperation, periodic failures and the occasional moment of genius.
