York Students in action
Over the weekend of February 4-5, a group of 18 York students journeyed to Sacramento for the annual Junior State of America Winter Congress Conference. At the conference, students wrote legislative bills and debated in the rooms of the State Capitol. Students attended committee hearings, delivered passionate speeches on the floor of the Senate, and added various amendments to the bills. During the closing session, the incredible effort of the York chapter was recognized in the form of 5 Best Speaker gavels. Helena Bartkowski '19 won two gavels for her speeches during the healthcare and environment House committees, and Tristen Laney '19 won two gavels for his speeches during the Armed Services committee and full Senate hearing. As well, Sophie Rasmussen '19 won a gavel for her speech defending her bill during the full House hearing. Additionally, Sophie Rasmussen '19 and Arjun Mayur '19 were able to pass their bill banning child beauty pageants in both the House and the Senate. All in all, it was an incredibly fun and successful weekend for York JSA'ers!
