York Cross Country Earn a Spot at CIF State Championships
Posted 11/19/2018 09:40AM

After several delays and uncertainty about when and where the CCS Cross Country championships would take place, York runners finally got the chance to run against the best in the Central Coast Section this past Sunday, November 18th. The varsity boys were projected to finish fifth in the section. If there is one thing we have learned through all of our training and trials of miles, it's that we adapt as a team, hold each other accountable, and lift each other up. Sunday's race was as gritty and gutsy a race as I have ever seen from this York team. We had runners digging deep and holding position even though things weren't unfolding as planned; we had runners step it up and race better than they had all year; and we had a gutsy finish by all. The team placed second overall and qualified for the CIF State Championships after missing out on the opportunity last year. This is the 13th consecutive year that York has placed in the top five at CCS. The varsity boys team includes seniors Tristen Laney, Adam Shapiro, and Alex Warzycki; juniors Owen Yu and Jonathan Zhao; and freshmen Michael Julian and Daniel Xu. The two alternates are sophomores Chris Hein and Ryo Ishiguro.

In the girl's race, Juliet Oliver ran more than a minute faster that her previous best at Toro (that's more than 20 seconds per mile!), and finished 19th overall, missing the chance to qualify for State as an individual by just five positions.

Thanks to the students, the alumn, the parents, teachers, and faculty who came to support or offered words of encouragement throughout the year. It makes us feel like we're running for a team much bigger than we actually are when we get that kind of support.
