A Man For All Seasons

Steve Peters association with York School began in 1986 when he succeeded Peter Kiefer as York’s cross country coach. Steve hails from Bishop, California, and comes from a family of talented runners. Steve immediately fit into the school’s culture and quickly became an important member of the York family. He has had amazing success with both the cross country and track teams, racking up an impressive number of titles, including six CCS team championships, six second place team finishes, as well as eight individual champions in cross-country. In track he coached two individual CCS champions in the metric mile and high jump. The high jumper went on to win the CIF California state championship in 1999.
In 1994, Steve joined the teaching faculty, and has taught both World History II and United States History. Later, he created new elective courses in both Economics and U.S. Government and Politics. In 2004, Steve assumed the position of Director of Athletics. He began an ambitious agenda to expand York’s sports program, adding four new sports: boys and girls lacrosse, water polo, basketball, and volleyball. Student participation has risen to an exceptionally high level under Steve’s guidance.
Steve enjoys running and bike riding long distances, watching programs such as Frontline, the American Experience, and C-SPAN. He loves engaging in spirited and thoughtful conversation and being an integral part of an academic community.
To sum up this talented, generous, and devoted teacher, the words of the poet come to mind:
“A man of angel’s wit and singular learning.....
a man of marvelous mirth and pastimes.....
a man for all seasons.”
