In Memory of Jim Tunney

December 17th, 2024

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Jim Tunney (1929-2024), a York trustee emeritus and former interim Head of School.

Jim had a great passion for York. In addition to the academic opportunities (which he believed are the best), he commented on the York ethos. Jim believed that York develops caring individuals, mentors, and role models.

Jim dedicated over 10 years of service to York’s Board of Trustees, providing steadfast support and thoughtful guidance. His advice to the Head of School was to "get close to the kids." He thought that the best way to be an effective leader is to understand the students.

In addition to his impactful time at York, Jim was a legendary NFL referee and a longtime sports columnist for the Monterey Herald.

We are profoundly grateful for Jim’s enduring positive influence on our community. His legacy will live on, and he will be deeply missed.
