Michael Borrowman

HISTORY; 9TH GRADE CO-DEAN  |  MBORROWMAN@YORK.ORG

One Great Teacher
By Lei Lei Bates, Former Faculty Member

Michael Borrowman, also known as "Mr. B," has been teaching history at York for over 25 years. He is a third generation history teacher and grew up in Bolton in the north of England. As far as he can remember, he always wanted to teach and whilst teaching fellow classmates in high school to prepare for their history exams, realized this could become his profession.

Mr. B has always believed he could make a better world through education. He studied history at Sheffield University, before training to be a history teacher at Sussex University and a special education teacher at Southampton University. While still in the U.K., he taught teenagers with special needs, then worked in a middle school teaching history.

After immigrating to the U.S. with his wife, he taught at risk students in Crescent City, California, before landing a position at York. He credits getting the job here to his handwritten resume and knowledge of coaching soccer. At York, he has pioneered the Asian History course and taught the 8th, 9th, and 12th grades. He currently is the 9th Grade Class Dean and has coached boys and girls soccer and field hockey. In 2015, he helped guide the Falcons to their first soccer title in over a decade.

Mr. B is passionate about modern music and attends a concert nearly every week. This is why he lives in Santa Cruz and van pools with students across the bay and has now done so for the distance of 15 times around the globe, and is still in orbit. His main feeling of satisfaction from teaching is when he helps a student discover a skill she never knew she had and guiding her in the best direction.

Mr. B is an outstanding history teacher. He exhibits expertise in the subjects he is teaching and spends time continuing to gain new knowledge in his field. He presents material in an enthusiastic manner and instills a hunger in his students to learn more on their own. He has the best qualities of a great teacher.
